What kind of cafe is Penelope Bakehouse?

A small one. Penelope Bakehouse is an Italian bakery in Scarborough with an espresso bar at the counter. We pull shots, steam milk for cappuccinos and lattes, and bake sourdough every day. Have your coffee here or take it with you.

There’s Nutella Bombe, crullers and Penny’s Cookies if you want something sweet. At lunch, try a focaccia sandwich or a slice of sourdough pizza.

We’re open Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. Weekends we’re closed.

Sourdough loaves on the shelf at Penelope Bakehouse in Scarborough

The starter behind every loaf

On May 17, 2017, Vince Stalteri quit his job as a construction project manager and engineer to cook. In 2018 he made his first sourdough starter, Anastasia. He nearly lost it, brought it back and renamed it Penelope.

By 2023 Penelope was raising the doughs at Penelope Social, our cafe and bar in Woodbridge. The Bakehouse opened in Scarborough in 2026, and it now bakes all of Social’s sourdough.
